Orange Creamsicle | Joy+Suffering

34

Is that what they're called?  Those creamy popsicles that are orange on the outside and vanilla on the inside?  They're one of my mom's favorites.  So today, our outfits say, "eat me."  Jax's cheeks say, "Kiss me," and his whole cute face says, "Munch on me all over."  His super cute overalls are from Cracker Barrel.

We wore this to church on Sunday.  Although we only made it for part of the service.  Jax napped for an HOUR AND A HALF IN HIS BASSINET (woo hoo!) at home on Sunday morning, all the way up until it was time for church to begin.  Then he was hungry.  Then he pooped all over himself (luckily on his pajamas, not on his church outfit).  And we arrived at church an hour late, but still in time to catch a bit of my mom's sermon.

Here's what I got out of what she preached, from a passage in First Peter.  We don't get the Biblical concept of having joy during suffering.  In America, we live very comfortable lives.  And we expect to live comfortable lives.  And we interpret the secular message of need/desire/expectation for comfortable, happy lives, onto the Biblical message of living the God-life.  Unfortunately, that's not the entire message of the Bible.

Because we're Americans, we want the Bible to ONLY say:
Joy+Prosperity,
Joy+Peace,
Joy+Good Life
And the Bible DOES talk about these things.  But it ALSO talks about
Joy+Suffering.

And we don't like that.  She went on to say she's not expecting us to get in a car accident and say, "Yipee!!!"  We're not spiritual masochists, as she put it.  But we have been given hope that this world is not IT.  That even when ugliness and sorrow, shootings and political divisiveness, exist here on earth, we can say, this earth is not all there is.  This is not our forever home.  We can have joy, not because of what IS, but because of what is COMING.  Sometimes what will come is some kind of redemption or making-into-good that God can do with something terrible, even here on earth.  But other times the hope we have is the hope of heaven.  The hope that what comes on earth might be sorrow, but what awaits in heaven is endless joy.  That what we do now to love God, to love humanity, really matters in eternity.
