Sorry about blurry photo number one. Camera quirk that I didn't notice soon enough for a re-shoot.
Jax and I visited a local farmer's market this morning, less than ten minutes from the house. I'm excited to find one that's so close, as the better / larger ones in town are thirty minutes from us (too far for weekly trips). I visited this one a couple weeks ago, and there were six veggie farmers.
This week there were about eight veggie farmers, along with a pastry lady, jam jelly guy, and a man selling small starter plants of various herbs and seasonal flowering things. I bought a few flowering things for my Tita, and he threw in a bluebonnet plant for free!
Last time I felt terrible buying anything... everyone is selling the same items for the same price. Who to buy from? So I bought one thing from almost each person.
This time I was bold enough to start talking to the farmers. Where is your farm? Do you run it? Who helps you? Are you organic / how close to organic / types of pesticides used? Is all this produce grown on your farm? I was surprised to find out most of them only grow about half of what they're selling. The other items they get from other parts of the state. It's not all organic. Some of them are as organic as they can be, others are just raising plants the traditional way. They were all really sweet, and excited to talk about their farms and products.
One man said his specialty is beets and radishes. He cut open a watermelon radish for me, which was the size of an orange, and this is what it looked like inside. So beautiful.
In fact, that's what I dressed like today - we match!
I didn't buy any, but when I came home and told my mom about it, she agreed we should try them out next week, along with some sweet beets. Looking forward to trying something new!
